I have known Diane and her husband
Frank for some years. They run Som
Brasiliero and it still remains one of my
favorite Brazilian groups. They had
talked to me when they were recording
this CD and when they were trying to
get guest musicians. Well here it is
and it was worth the wait. The material
is a mix of pop and r&b but given that
jazzy feel that makes every track
sound like it was written for Diane.
Guest musicians include Kirk Whalum,
Cole Burgess, Houston Person,
Wycliffe Gordon, Rod McGaha, Mark
Douthit and Anthony LaMarchina. The
Rascals' Felix Cavaliere joins her for
duet on "Groovin'" and also weighs in
with B3. Diane not only had a terrific
voice but also plays nifty keyboards.
Diane shows that though Nashville is
Music City, it isn't all Country. Love
it!!!!
This is like going back to my folk club
days in the 60's and listening to
Stefan Grossman, Mike Cooper and
Mississippi Fred McDowell. Steve is a
fabulous guitarist and this is a CD that
is going to live in my car for the
foreseeable future. Steve covers
material by Robert Johnson, Mance
Lipscomb, Rev. Robert Wilkins, Muddy
Waters and Bo Carter among others
and he breathes new life into every
cut. This is pure magic.
Much as I have said with Steve Howell
repeat for David Egan with the
exception that David plays piano and
all the songs are original. At times
David reminds me of Fats Domino and
then other times he sounds like Van
Morrison. However, this is also a
keeper and just listen for that
trombone played by Chris Belleau. The
CD was recorded In Lafayette,
Louisiana and Nashville. Again, I have
to say...this is pure magic.

Pure brilliance. This is an album that
reaches back to my years in the folk
clubs including the a capella version of
Son House's "Grinnin' In Your Face."
There is an interesting blend of cover
and original material. Among the
covers are Tom Waits' "Little Trip To
Heaven" and Robert Johnson's "Dust
My Broom." Scott is a mighty fine slide
guitar player and songwriter and has
one of the most soulful voices heard
any side of Vermont. He is ably
supported by cellist, Eugene Friesen,
guitarist, Sam Broussard and multi
instrumentalist, T-Bone Wolk. This is
one of the best CDs you will hear this
year and any year.
An interesting pairing. However, I'm not
sure what audience it is aimed at.
Willie seems to take a subordinate role
in the partnership and frankly, Trigger
just sounds out of place. This reminds
of the recording of violin greats
Stephane Grappelli and Yehudi
Menuhin. They were both masters of
their instrument in their particular
genre but together it didn't work.
Likewise here added which Williie's
style of singing seems to be fighting
the tempo of the other musicians or
maybe it's the other way. Shame,
because I actually went out and
bought the CD.
You may remember Benita as the
writer of "One Pina Colada." However,
she is so much more. I am a big Benita
fan and I rate her up there with the
best Jazz singers around. If she had
born sixty years ago, we would be
talking about her alongside Ella, Sarah
and Rosemary. This album has been
out a little while but she passed a copy
to me recently and the music is
timeless. Although she doesn't play
piano on this CD, she is a very adept
player and of course, she is a great
writer. When I heard "The London I
Remember" I actually got homesick.

Frank Is one (or is it more than one)
funny guy. This has to be one of the
most hilarious CDs ever. Check out the
DVD...
Here
OK, I own up, I have no time for so
called comedians that have to use
four-letter words continually. Never
have and I never will. However, in
fairness to "the next generation of the
Blue Collar Comedy Tour," I suffered
through this. My thoughts? If this is the
next generation, I really hope that Jeff,
Larry, Bill and Ron leave no comedic
offspring. John Caparulo is just not
funny. I understand that he was a
doorman. I can only hope that the door
hits his butt on the way out!!
I can't say I dislike this CD because I
don't. The only trouble is that I've
heard it all before....James Brown, Sam
& Dave, Sam The Sham, Ray Charles,
Bo Diddley and if you take away his
steel, Robert Randolph and even
Redbone.and most definitely shades of
Millie Jackson. When he toasts, it could
be Chris Rock. But most
definitely...James Brown!!! I think you
get the picture. I am sure that Joe
rocks the joint at a live gig and
perhaps the label needs to put out a
live DVD.

Now Christian Finnegan is genuinely
funny and definitely different. So why, I
ask myself, does he have to resort to
four letter words? Is it the shock effect
like Lennie Bruce or what? When is
someone going to tell these new guys
that stars and i mean genuine star
funny men like Milton Berle, Sid Cesar,
Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall etc. may
have been off color but they didn't
need to f*** this or where the f*** is
that. However, if you can get past that,
you may want to check his DVD
here.
As I say, Christian is funny. I am not
sure what the cover design's relevance
is because it is reminiscent of the
Soviet poster for workers unite.
Now the first time I saw Ron was in the
Blue Collar Comedy movie and I fell
about laughing. Now, Ron is lot more
squeaky clean with the Blue Collar
Comedy guys that on his solo work. I
have an aversion to four letter words
from comedians but somehow with Ron
it seems as natural as can be. So why
do I give Ron a thumbs up instead a
two fingers up? The answer is that he
is downright funny. Not all time but at
least most of it. Which as any funny
man will tell you that's not bad odds.
Sure, Ron isn't exactly a role model but
then nor was Lennie Bruce, Richard
Pryor or Cheech and Chong but then
they didn't aspire to be.
Once again Cledus proves that you
can be funny without being crude. Yes,
I agree with him, he should have an
HBO special or even a GAC special.
This is possibly the best CD that CTJ
has released in a while. He was once a
fat boy who was almost a novelty. Now
he is slimmer, trimmer and can be
viewed as a keen and relevant
observer. The CD has not a bad cut in
sight but my favorite is without doubt
"Merger On Music Row." It should be
released as a single assuming there is
a label to release it on! Although the
addition of Ashton Shepherd, Brooks &
Dunn, Jamie Johnson, Terry Eldridge,
Colt Ford and Daryle Singletary was
intended to give the album "vocal
correctness," it isn't necessary
because as a sad indictment of current
vocal requirements, Cledus sounds
pretty good anyway. Love it, Barry.
Good to have you back.

Big Pete is the real deal. He is a Blues
shouter in the old school. However, in
his less "screaming" moments, his
vocals are not unlike B.B. King. This is
thoroughly enjoyable and is a must
have for all Blues fans.
Here we go again!! I am sure this is
great in the clubs but give me Jeff
Foxworthy and Bill Engvall. Yes I like
my comedy clean and funny. This
didn't come with a bad taste warning.
Bill told me about this new album some
months ago on Facebook and so I
have been champing at the bit until it
was in my hot little hands. It is classic
Engvall. Alone of the Blue Comedy
guys, his humor ages with him.
Whereas it was mainly his young kids,
Emma and Travis (they are now at
college) who constituted a lot of his
material, it is now his wife Gail who
provides the inspiration. Bill is no
longer 15 degrees off cool, he is just
becoming one of the old farts but
doing what we other old farts can't do
and that is to take a necessary
occurrence like a colonoscopy and
making it a comedy classic. I am now
waiting for the DVD of this great
concert in Chicago.

Magic, pure magic. Even the early
material stuff still makes me laugh. Buy
this for Christmas and have yourself a
merry one. Ten stars out of five!!!!
All that I said about the CD is of course
the same for the DVD. Additionally,
Bill's physical humor makes this a
genuine Engvall masterpiece. My only
regret is that the Chicago audience
didn't get into it a bit more. However, it
is Bill that is the important factor here
and he is great. Also, make sure you
check out the "Here's Your Sign" extra
section. It is a hoot.
