When I think about the Muzik Mafia, I am reminded of the story of Icarus flying too near to the sun. I am also reminded of the first wave of rock'n'roll. When it was over, it was followed by anemic performers like Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon and Fabian. Much the same has happened following the meteoric rise to the limelight of Gretchen Wilson and Big & Rich. They have been followed by a bunch of wimpy singers, both male and female without an ounce of the same musical talent that made the Muzik Mafia priceless. Listening to Gretchen's Great Hits package, I realize that she was and still is one of the finest female singers to have emerged in the last decade. She sings with power when necessary that is unmatched and she sings ballads with depth that those that followed in her wake can only dream about. What also makes one aware while listening to this collection is how good a songwriter she is. Definitely my CD of the month.
