I have to be honest and say that I have never been a fan of Miranda's work. I also should say that I do not like Frank Liddell and Mike Wrucke's everything but the kitchen style of production and so I took the view of seeing what I did like about this CD. It actually turned out easier than I thought. Forget cuts 1-5 because they smash your head in and then go on to enjoy 6-15. Because the CD is like two CDs. I particularly liked Miranda's songs "Airstream Song" and "Makin' Plans." However, my favorites are "The House That Built Me," "Sin For Sin" (which she wrote with Blake Shelton) and "Virginia Bluebell." Overall the CD gets a thumbs up and is definitely, for me, her best to date.

On his solo CD, Big Kenny has left behind his Muzik Mafia background and concentrated on what can only be called World Music. The songs are influenced by everything from Native American music to hard edged blues. I doubt that this will appeal to hard core Country fans and is probably too intelligent for those who like the current crop of cotton candy Country. Anyone who likes Lynyrd Skynyrd, B.B. King, John Lee Hooker and Eric Clapton is going to drool over this. Now you might ask, why do I like this and slam some so called Country singers. That is easy. Firstly, Kenny doesn't burst my ear drums. Secondly, this is real. Whether Big & Rich ever resurface with a new CD is almost irrelevant because, Kenny has started on a new road. The nearest he gets to B & R is the closing track, "Share The Love" which actually owes more to 60s BritPop. I could almost hear Herman's Hermits sing it. My favorite cut is the jaunty "Happy People." A+ for this CD.

When I listened to Toby singing the soulful ballad "Are You Feelin' Me," I was reminded of Ronnie Milsap. Then I looked at the track listing and lo and behold there was a song , "Cryin' For Me," featuring my favorite sax player, Dave Koz and I realized that I was listening to a different Toby Keith. In fact, this is like a retro soul album and beautiful for it. "Woke Up On My Own" is a song that I can see being covered by the likes of Brian McKnight or Usher and "If You're Tryin' You Ain't" is a hat tip to The Temptations when Norman Whitfield produced them. Oh yes, back to "Cryin' For Me (Wayman's Song)." It is pure magic. It is a tribute to basketball star and jazz musician, Wayman Tisdale. My goose bumps have goose bumps. However, lest you think that Toby has forsaken his braggadocio style, there is "Loaded" and for the patriotic, there is "Ballad Of Balad." At least, I think it's patriotic; it maybe too comedic for that. Anyway, this is my Album of the Month. Toby, you have added a fan!!!
