I have been a Big Kenny and John
Rich flag waver from the get-go. I was
also one of the first to write about the
Muzik Mafia and until I get a brand new
CD in my hot little hand, this is going to
have to keep me content. For anyone
new out there, go and buy it NOW. You
can thank me later. Great stuff and
with the DVD, this is great value.
So, if it is to be believed, Kix and
Ronnie are going their separate ways. I
will never understand why a winning
team decides to do that. Just look at
Alabama and Exile. They have proven
that the parts do not exceed the one
unit. I don't know whether the success
of Sugarland has precipitated their
decision but it really shouldn't. This
retrospective just shows the quality of
B & D as performers, writers and
producers. This is a perfect Christmas
gift for the younger generation so they
can get to know the guys.
Once again Cracker Barrel have done
it and once again George proves why
he is called The Rolls-Royce of
Country Singers. You don't need my
waffle....just go into your nearest
Cracker Barrel Country Store and buy
this instant classic!!!

This is a very adventurous CD/DVD
package. There is no doubt that Aaron
is very talented and that his band are
good musicians. That's why I hate to
see their efforts ruined by bad
production and less than competent
video coverage. I realize that this is a
live project but screaming girls do not
help it. The Lighting Director has this
love affair with magenta and the sound
guy hasn't synched the audio track. I
notice that Audio Post Production was
done at Ray Benson's studio. The
shame is that the entire CD wasn't
recorded there with Ray at the
console. I think a studio album or a well
produced project would have done
favors for Aaron.
I really wanted to like this but I don't
like having my head smacked by heavy
handed production. It seems to be the
fashion nowadays for a songwriter to
have some success and imagine that
that is the basis for being a producer.
Fraid it doesn't cut it. I just wish Justin
would go and produce as near to an
acoustic CD as it is possible to have.
Bring in someone like Frank Rogers or
Buddy Cannon. If I want to listen to
Lynyrd Skynyrd then that would be
another thing but I hoped for Country
music and I didn't get it. It would be
churlish to make any adverse comment
about the photographs because that is
the least problem with this CD. Justin,
dump your producer, your co-writers
and your photographer. You deserve
to have better. Either that or lose the
hat and become a rock singer.
Let's say straight away that this isn't
Country but there are several reasons
why I like it. Firstly, the production
doesn't smack me around the head
and is actually very intelligent. The
harmonies are excellent; sure they are
similar to Rascal Flatts but then again
they are also like Crosby, Stills & Nash.
The songs are well crafted which one
expect when Robert Ellis Orrall is a
co-writer. I see among the musicians is
Joe Caverlee who many of you will
remember from Yankee Gray. I think
that Disney's new imprint, Carolwood
may want to pitch this and the group at
mainstream pop. My favorite song is
without doubt "It's Up To You." That
said, there is really not a bad cut on
the CD. This is a keeper.

I have to be honest and say that I have
never been a fan of Miranda's work. I
also should say that I do not like Frank
Liddell and Mike Wrucke's everything
but the kitchen style of production and
so I took the view of seeing what I did
like about this CD. It actually turned out
easier than I thought. Forget cuts 1-5
because they smash your head in and
then go on to enjoy 6-15. Because the
CD is like two CDs. I particularly liked
Miranda's songs "Airstream Song" and
"Makin' Plans." However, my favorites
are "The House That Built Me," "Sin
For Sin" (which she wrote with Blake
Shelton) and "Virginia Bluebell."
Overall the CD gets a thumbs up and
is definitely, for me, her best to date.
On his solo CD, Big Kenny has left
behind his Muzik Mafia background
and concentrated on what can only be
called World Music. The songs are
influenced by everything from Native
American music to hard edged blues. I
doubt that this will appeal to hard core
Country fans and is probably too
intelligent for those who like the current
crop of cotton candy Country. Anyone
who likes Lynyrd Skynyrd, B.B. King,
John Lee Hooker and Eric Clapton is
going to drool over this. Now you might
ask, why do I like this and slam some
so called Country singers. That is
easy. Firstly, Kenny doesn't burst my
ear drums. Secondly, this is real.
Whether Big & Rich ever resurface with
a new CD is almost irrelevant because,
Kenny has started on a new road. The
nearest he gets to B & R is the closing
track, "Share The Love" which actually
owes more to 60s BritPop. I could
almost hear Herman's Hermits sing it.
My favorite cut is the jaunty "Happy
People." A+ for this CD.
When I listened to Toby singing the
soulful ballad "Are You Feelin' Me," I
was reminded of Ronnie Milsap. Then I
looked at the track listing and lo and
behold there was a song , "Cryin' For
Me," featuring my favorite sax player,
Dave Koz and I realized that I was
listening to a different Toby Keith. In
fact, this is like a retro soul album and
beautiful for it. "Woke Up On My Own"
is a song that I can see being covered
by the likes of Brian McKnight or Usher
and "If You're Tryin' You Ain't" is a hat
tip to The Temptations when Norman
Whitfield produced them. Oh yes, back
to "Cryin' For Me (Wayman's Song)." It
is pure magic. It is a tribute to
basketball star and jazz musician,
Wayman Tisdale. My goose bumps
have goose bumps. However, lest you
think that Toby has forsaken his
braggadocio style, there is "Loaded"
and for the patriotic, there is "Ballad Of
Balad." At least, I think it's patriotic; it
maybe too comedic for that. Anyway,
this is my Album of the Month. Toby,
you have added a fan!!!

Now I am a big Luke Bryan admirer. In
fact, when he released his first CD, I
begged Capitol to hold onto him and I
am glad that they did. This sophomore
CD takes Luke further along the fame
path. Producer Jeff Stephens
(Remember him with The Bullets?) is a
producer in the classic mode and your
ears stay intact and don't get blown
away. The title track is a jolly affair but
it is the ballad, "Do I" that stands out
for me. Written by Luke with Lady
Antebellum's Charles Kelley and Dave
Haywood; it is stylish. Luke and
Rodney Atkins have a lot in common.
They write and sing of home and the
likelihood of hearing about "The
Islands" is remote. "Someone Else Is
Calling You Baby" is a  throwback to
the 80's and I could imagine T.G.
Sheppard singing it two decades ago. I
still don't know whether Luke should
have recorded "Apologize." Originally a
monster world-wide hit for
OneRepublic, Luke doesn't really add
anything to what was a classic
recording. Perhaps if he had recorded
the original, it may have been different.
Overall, this is a very workman like CD
and will certainly enhance Luke's
career.
Yet again Cracker Barrel have done it.
They have out Wal-Marted Wal-Mart
and are fact becoming the most
important retailer of Country product.
They have created a market for the
genre that had not even been
contemplated. Alan's CD is just part of
an entire marketing concept, The Alan
Jackson Collection that includes
furniture, clothes and memorabilia. It is
a marketing master plan and the
product is not cheap and nasty. In fact,
I wouldn't mind a rocking chair on my
front deck!! Most of the songs will be
familiar to AJ fans (me included).
Hearing again, "She's Got The Rhythm
(I Got The Blues), I wondered why Alan
and Randy Travis haven't written
together again. There are two
previously unreleased cuts on ths CD,
"That's What I'd Be Like Without You"
and his recording of the Gene Watson
hit "Nothing Sure Looked Good On
You." Listening to this delightful CD, I
kept asking myself if this is Country
music (which it is) what is the rubbish
that is being hurled at us by the so
called Country singers? Every
producer should listen to Keith Stegall
and Scott Hendricks and learn Country
Producing 101 and every songwriter
should listen to Alan and learn what
Country songwriting is about and
finally, wannabe Country singers
should also listen to Alan and find out
why he sells millions of records and
millions of tickets. This is my CD of the
month.
Now you may be asking why John
Fogerty is listed under Country.
Simple...this is more Country than
virtually anything you will hear any
Nashville label release this year, last
year and probably next year. Was it
recorded in Nashville....no; are there
any Nashville pickers....no and yet it is
totally Country. I have already worn out
one copy of this CD and will no doubt
wear out many more. John is helped
out by Don Henley and Timothy B.
Schmit (Eagles) and The Boss. A
contender for my album of the year.

Now I have been a Reba McEntire
admirer going back to the Mercury
days in the 1970s. Her MCA singles
were and are impeccable. So needless
to say, I was excited at the prospect of
new material from her. Last time an
MCA star went to Big Machine/Valory
was a couple years back when Trisha
Yearwood released "Heaven,
Heartaches And The Power Of Love"
which was brilliant but did little.

On this CD Reba has two
co-producers, Mark Bright and Tony
Brown. I've never been an admirer of
Mark's production output but Tony has
for years been George Strait's
producer. So enough said.

Unfortunately, this CD fails on two
fronts. Firstly the production is of the
kitchen sink variety; that is an attempt
to put everything into the mix. Now
Mark and Tony, you should know that
less is more. Secondly, the songs are
formulaic. Have we not heard "Pink
Guitar" somewhere before? "Nothing
To Lose" was written by the
redoubtable Bluegrasser, Kim Fox but
the way it is produced there is no
finesse. The only redeeming song is
the final cut, "I'll Have What She's
Having"  which is a nice little swing
number  from Georgia Middleman and
Jimmy Melton.

Reba we don't want our brains beaten
up with this sort of production. Please
take us back to the subtleties of
"Whoever's In New England" and "Is
There Life Out There." That is what
grew your fan base and what will get
you into the Country Music Hall of
Fame.
In many ways, Bomshel is like a female
Big & Rich with a lot of the same
charm. Although the CD is on the
rockier side of Country, Chuck Howard
has avoided the trap stepped in by so
many others. He doesn't beat your
head up and doesn't clutter the track.
Even the lead guitars don't scream at
you. I have seen the girls many times
live but I was still apprehensive about
how they would translate to studio
recording. The stand out tracks are
without doubt "Love Me For Me" and
"Thank You."
This is Carrie's third CD and is a
distinct improvement upon "Carnival
Ride." The songs are split between
those written by seasoned hands like
Hillary Lindsay, Gordie Sampson, Jim
Collins and Paul Overstreet and those
written by Carrie and her team. The
songs range from headbangers like
"Cowboy Casanova" to the gentle
"Temporary Home." Vince Gill does
background vocals on "Look At Me"
while Sons of Sylvia (formerly the
alliterative Clark Family) are featured
on "What Can I Say." "Look At Me"
which comes from Jim Collins and Paul
Overstreet is definitely Carrie the
Country singer. It also shows that she
is extremely capable of singing in the
genre without having to resort to any
form of pop music. However, the next
track, "Unapologize" is very messy.

Mark Bright's production is on the
whole very sensitive to Carrie's vocals.
The photographs are very average
and don't do Carrie justice. Obviously it
will be a #1 album. The single "Cowboy
Casanova" is not an indicator of the
rest of the CD. The album is much
better.

I have always felt that Joe was under
rated. Apart from the rap remix of
"Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off,"
this is a perfect album. All the songs
are potential singles. My particular
favorites are the title track and
"Cheaper Than A Shrink," both
co-written by Bill Anderson and Buddy
Cannon as well as "Believers" and "An
Old Friend Of Mine." Apart from that
remix, I just love this CD. This is a
keeper and you know what? It's REAL
Country!!!
This is the album that will ensure
Lorrie's place in the Country Music Hall
of Fame. It is the nearest thing to
perfection that there can be. The
production is impeccable and Lorrie's
performance is just simply magical.
Every female singer needs to listen to
this CD and learn and every so called
producer should study the skills of
Wally Wilson and Chip Voorhis and get
an education. This is definitely my
Album of the Month and is a contender
for my Album of the Year.
Let me say at the outset that this is not
a Country album but I didn't want it to
get overlooked. I have never
understood why Jonell is not a major
star. I can only hope that this new CD
will be the one to finally make the world
at large discover this wonderfully
talented singer and writer. I had the
pleasure of working with Jonell on the
last Orleans & Friends event in
Nashville back in September and
discovered up close what an amazing
talent she is. There is a further
Orleans connection on this CD.
Several of the songs were written with
John Hall who was a founder member
of the group. My good friend Bil
VornDick produced and he has done
his a fabulous job as one would expect.
Supporting Jonell are such stellar
talents as Jimmy Hall, Bekka Bramlett,
Jerry Douglas, John Cowan, David
Hungate and Victor Wooten.

Gary Raykin has an amazing voice!
Many of you may remember him as the
lead singer of The Vogues. On this
CD, he puts his toes into Country
music and succeeds manfully. Many of
the songs you will recognize but even
well known ditties such as "Unchained
Melody," he infuses with his four
octave vocal range. The original songs
are written by Don Oriolo who is
perhaps better known for his work on
Felix The Cat. My favorite cuts apart
from "Unchained Melody" are the
Oriolo originals "You Are The Light"
and "I Feel You Near,"  "Five O'Clock
World" (which was a hit for Hal
Ketchum), "This Magic Moment" (a hit
for the Drifters and Jay & The
Americans) and the swing version of
Bon Jovi's "I'll Be There For You."
Interestingly, Bon Jovi's engineer, Obie
O'Brien co-produced the CD.
Throughout the production is stated
but not over stated. This is a definite
keeper.
Most of this CD was recorded back in
2006 just after the death of his
stepfather. I don't know if that is the
reason it is so low key but I am not
sure he will look back at this album with
any sense of satisfaction. On most of
the cuts his is supported by his road
band but it is on the final track, "Love
You Goodbye" which features studio
musos that he seems to come alive.
Other worthy songs are the title tack
and "Forever Seventeen." Let's hope
that 2010 brings forth a CD more
worthy to Tim's voice and talents.
A few years ago, Darrell Scott's daddy,
Wayne released an album when he
was up there in years and it was a
gem. Dickie Lee is no kid either and
the same comments apply to this
release. It is masterful and Dickie Lee
is a treasure. One of the major albums
of 2009.
