I have know Jimmy for many years and
have enjoyed his brand of Bluegrass.
So imagine my surprise when I started
playing his new CD and find it to be
one of the best straight ahead Country
records that I had heard in a long
while. This should be compulsory
listening for every wannabee Country
singer. Excellent stuff.
This could well have been titled "Songs
My Daddy Taught Me." It is an
exquisite collection of covers of classic
Country and Folk-Country songs. As
an added pleasure, Rosanne is aided
by The Boss, Elvis Costello, Wilco's
Jeff Tweedy and Rufus Wainwright.
The only song with which I have
proplems is Marijohn Wilkin/Danny
Dill's "Long Black Veil." The problem is
that this is just not a female song and
is certainly not a duet. That aside, it is
the thoroughly enjoyable CD. Although
it is not released until October, it is well
worth ordering now.
I have been a fan of Patty's since her
first album for MCA. Although she may
have moved on from those heady
days, she along with Kathy Mattea
remain the most important female
singers of the last 20 years. Just as
Kathy came back with a vengeance
with "Coal" so Patty has realeased a
CD that crosses the borders between
Country, Folk, Gospel and Old-Timey
music. Her re-reading of Harlan
Howard's "Busted" adds a relevance to
the song that hasn't been there before.
Much as Hazel Dickens and Alice
Gerrad pioneered so Patty Loveless
has followed and made relevant to the
new century. Although this isn't
released until September, order it now.

According to John Sebastian, there are
1352 guitar pickers in Nashville.
However, he could have added that
there are but a handful of Certified
Guitar Players and Steve Wariner is
one. I have liked Steve both as a
performer and as a person for many
years and therefore it is appropriate
that she should produce the perfect
CD. In recording a tribute to Mr. Chet,
he has also produced a tribute to his
own immense skills as well as tipping
his hat to Jerry Reed and Django
Reinhardt.  "Silent Strings" speaks
volumes. This my CD of the month and
may even end up as my CD of the
year. Fabulous Steve.
When you have the luxury of already
being in the Country Music Hall of
Fame and you are one of the biggest
crowd pleasers in popular music, then
you can afford to experiment. "Twang"
is definitely an experiment. Firstly we
see George the songwriter, which
rarely happened before, we see son
Bubba contributing songs and we hear
George singing in Spanish. The
experiment has not exactly worked.
Partly because the songs are not all as
good as could be and because there
are less stand out potential hits as one
would hope. The best song is definitely
"The Breath You Take." No doubt the
CD will top the charts but it could have
been better.
I heard David a few years ago when he
was on Mercury and that was live and
in an acoustic setting. He was very
good. I am sure that he still is but all I
could hear on this effort was him being
hit on the head with a rock production.
Please get him out from under the
noise and either remix or get rid of his
producers and start again. I want to
hear this talented guy.

14. I Can't Sing
I had the pleasure of hearing Sarah
when she played the opening
reception for Black River Music Group
and I was very impressed. Although
this is a pleasant CD, that magic that
marked her on stage performance has
not been captured here. Sarah should
be marketed as a pop performer rather
than a Country one. In fact, she
sounds not unlike a younger Sade.
Sarah has a lot of talent both as a
singer and writer and that is bound to
surface.
I have to own up. During the days
when Larry and his brothers were in
their heyday, I never used to rush to
listen to their albums, the same way
that I would for say Willie, Waylon or
Johnny. Yes, the strange thing is that
when I did get around to listening, I
used to curse myself for not having
listened sooner. This CD is no
different. I put off listening until I knew I
had to and lo and behold, another
surprise. The trio have lost none of
their harmonies and Larry is in as fine
a voice as ever. This is a great way for
a new generation to get to know of
their fine work.
In Colt's own words "I Can't Sing." and
that really sums it up. He is really a
rapper with a cowboy hat. Now don't
get me wrong, I don't dislike rap and in
fact there are some tracks that have
some charm. "No Trash In My Trailer"
is funny in a blue collar sort of way and
at times the CD runs between
Confederate Railroad and Big & Rich.
What Colt's future holds only time will
tell. Whether there is room for rap or
hip-hop within Country music is open to
conjecture. The only person so far to
get away with it is Neal McCoy and that
was on just one song. Colt may find
real success by getting rid of the garb
and returning to mainstream Hip-Hop.

I had the pleasure of working with Art
on the photographs for this CD.
However, nothing could have prepared
me for the quality of the finished
recording. Art has a voice that is very
reminiscent of Don Williams. He wrote
all the songs on the CD and I am here
to tell you that they are quality songs.
He has also recruited some heavy
hitters for his musicians that include
Viktor Krauss, Stuart Duncan and
Aubrey Hanie. This is a first rate CD
and one that should be in everyone's
collection.
It's been way too long since the last
Tanya Tucker studio CD but she has
come back like gang busters with "My
Turn." Produced by Pete Anderson, it
has that same quality that marked a lot
of the early Dwight Yoakam. That is
traditional Country with that certain
edginess. There is not a bad cut and
my only carp is that the drumming at
times goes a bit awry. The stand out
track for me is Wynn Stewart's "Big, Big
Love." Superb.
I would not want to be an exec at RCA
and having to select the singles from
this excellent sophomore CD from
Chris. Produced beautifully (as one
would expect by James Stroud), it
actually gets better with each hearing.
My personal favorite is without doubt
the very classy cover of Tony Joe
White's "Rainy Night In Georgia," but
frankly there is not a bad cut on the
CD. Chris has what it takes to be a
stayer.

10. It Ain't What You're Thinkin'
The first time that Sugarland came
across my vision was at the CMA Music
Festival back when they were a trio.
They impressed me as a very good live
act. Then came the CDs and my
interest in them waned as they
released one formulaic album after
another. Sure radio loved them
because radio likes formulaic music.
Now we have a live CD and there is
that energy that has been missing for
me. However, since their early years,
they have morphed into Fleetwood
Mac. Now that is OK for me because I
like Mac; always have since I worked
with them back in the 70s. What is
Country music's loss is most certainly
Rock/Pop music's gain. Sugarland are
looking more and more towards Rock
for material especially, the Kings of
Leon. This means that you have a very
solid CD rather than Nashville's often
piss poor attempt of emulating Rock
and Pop. My one beef is with the
photographs which have to be the
worst concert shots it has been my
misfortune to see. I have students who
can do better with their eyes closed!!
So burn the booklet and listen and
watch the music.
This is pure magic!! jAm is in that
wonderful tradition of Freddy Fender,
Johnny Rodriguez and Rick Trevino
who sings in both English and Spanish
and he does so to great effect on this
CD. The songs are a cut above the
material that comes out of Nashville
proving yet again that the best Country
music comes from Austin, Texas. This
is a first rate CD.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Tom
a few years back and he impressed me
greatly. This new CD continues his
road to success. The songs are
excellent and the production doesn't hit
you over the head. My favorite cuts are
"Everytime I Close My Eyes" and "It
Ain't What You're Thinkin'. This is first
rate and is head and shoulders above
the major label product. In act every
producer should listen to the CD to see
what contemporary Country should be
about.

7. It Should've Been Me

This is a most excellent album. Lots of
influence abound from his Confederate
Railroad stylings with songs like "White
Trash With Money" written by CR band
mate, Danny Shirley to a cool version
of Rod Stewart's "Tonight's The Night"
and on to n interesting version of the
tehme from "The Sopranos," entitled
"Chosen One." There is not one bad
cut here and could be the stepping
stone for Cody as he works on his solo
career.
