This is the discovery of the year! I just
love this album. It is a mix of Buffett,
James Taylor and good ol' Western
Swing. I got together with Mike and you
can hear what this seafaring singer
and songwriter has to say
here. The
fact that Mike isn't a major star is a
travesty. He has more talent in his
pinky than most have in their entire
body. Go and buy this CD. It is feel
good music at its best.
There maybe some of you are new to
the name "Bruce Sudano." Bruce is
married to and works closely with
Donna Summer and was a co-founder
of Brooklyn Dreams. Bruce makes his
home just outside Nashville and we
have a treasure in our midst. I have
listed it under Americana, but I could
have listed it under Jazz or created a
category named "tasty." All I know is
that it is intelligent music for the
discerning. If you like Michael
McDonald, Steely Dan and Santana,
then you will love this.
Although I have quoted the title of the
first cut in my "war" against The Grand
Ole Opry's mistreating of Keith Bilbrey,
I have yet to get past the first cut. I just
don't know why Shelton has to resort
to what I will politely call profanity. He
has a lot of talent if only he cared to
reveal it. He is definitely country when
he wants to be but unfortunately those
that would like to hear his music are
put off by the profanities. Still, I will
work through it and report back.

Unlike their last CD, "Wanderin' which
took a couple of listens to get into, this
is an instant winner. Of course, the
production by Bil VornDick is as
always, impeccable. This is probably
the band's most eclectic outing. From
the Django Reinhardt gypsy jazz of
"Sunday Morning" to the Fats
Waller-ish "Nothing's Too Good For My
Baby" into the Lennonish "Love Me
Like I Love You," every track is
musically and vocally a treat. My
favorite is the straight-ahead Country
song, "Will This End In Tears."
Last time out, I did not care for Jewel's
"Perfectly Clear" album which she
produced with John Rich. This time,
she has taken up the production reins
completely and the result is superb.
Although this has a lot of Country and I
mean real Country touches including
some mighty fine yodeling from this
very talented lady, there is enough
folk-based material that puts it slap
dab in the middle of Americana in it's
purest sense. Her vibrato is at times a
competitor to Aaron Neville. Jewel is
just that; a diamond among a lot of
glass copies. This is probably one of
the best albums to be released this
year.
At 53, this is no vanity debut album for
Bob Young. He has earned his bones
around the clubs and honky tonks and
that experience shows. He is the stuff
of which legends are made; part
Country and part Blues. This CD is
produced by Stick Davis of the
Amazing Rhythm Aces, Michael Webb
of Gary Allen's band and Carlton
Moody from Burrito DeLuxe. That
spells quality. Bob's songs are right on
the money and he reminds me of the
best of Van Morrison and the bluesy
side of Mike Henderson. I hope that I
can get Bob into the studio for an
interview very soon. This is excellent.

Ryan is in that area that is surrounded
by Americana, Country and Rock. His
voice is gravelly and in the area
inhabited by Kris Kristofferson and
John Prine. If you like that area of
music, then you will like this CD.
A few months ago I reviewed a solo CD
By another SKB alumnus, Thom
Schuyler and said that he was a
national treasure. Everything I said vis
a vis Thom applies to Craig and this
marvellous CD. Hearing the songs
reminds that we now live for the most
part in a world of writing pygmies.
These are recording in which the song
is paramount, not the arrangement.
Craig has surrounded himself with a
slew of talented musicians including
Lloyd Maines, Andy Leftwich, Tim
O'Brien, Byron House, Kenny Vaughn,
Rusty Young, Janis Ian, Maura
O'Connell and Beth Nielson Chapman.
I particularly like Craig's adaptation of
the legendary John Renborn's
arrangement of the folk song, "Lord
Franklin" which features co-producer,
John Mock on bodhran, whistle and
harmonium. One of the joys of this CD
is to hear Craig's daughter, Aislinn,
harmonize with her father. She is a star
in the making. One of the finest CDs
this year.
This CD was actually released in the
fall of 2008 but somehow didn't make
it's way onto my desk until now. It was
definitely my loss at not having it
before because like all of Rodney's
CDs, it is a gem. Perhaps not up to
:The Houston Kid" but that would be
difficult to emulate. I used to say of
Kristofferson's songs that once he had
established a benchmark in songs, he
would brings out an album which
rewrote the songwriting book. Rodney
is the same. Just listen to "Truth
Decay" and "I've Done Everything I
Can." I will also bet that there are a lot
of covers of "The Night's Just Right"
before long. Great CD and one
Rodney's best.

This Canadian group had me from the
Procul Harum-ish introduction. Their
music is a blend of Celtic, Rock and
Americana. The five guys in the group
are immensely talented musically and
you can look out for some fine fiddle
playing, mandolin and bagpipes! This
is an album that will return time and
again to my player. A revelation and
one for the ages.
While there is nothing wrong with this
CD, there is nothing original. Baker,
who I assume is Charlie Baker, seems
to be influenced by a lot of acts both
from the West Coast and elsewhere.
Some cuts sound like Queen, some
like AC/DC, some like Chris Izaac but
at the end of it, I am no wiser who the
real Baker is. The production and
musicianship can't be faulted and the
songs are OK. Please let us know
which is really you.
This is an OK CD without being ground
breaking. Musically, it holds up
especially on the Buddy Killen
produced lead-off cover of the Beatles,
"She Loves You." Scott is workmanlike
without giving that sparkle that one
associates with star in the making.

There is no denying that Bryan is a
very talented musician and a pretty
fine songwriter. This double package is
very adventurous but also from a
reviewers standpoint very confusing.
The acoustic disc is out and out
Bluegrass and very fine Bluegrass at
that. The Electric CD takes us on an
eclectic electric ride taking several
songs on the Acoustic CD and
reworking them. Both CDs are first rate
but having listened to both, I kept
asking the same question..."Will the
Real Bryan Clark stand up?"
For many years, Levon Helm was
thought of the drummer and mandolin
player in The Band and then he
became known as the actor who
played Loretta Lynn's dad in "Coal
Miner's Daughter." Then he started to
become an almost iconic performer
and then came "Dirt Farmer" and he
became a star. The CD won a Grammy
and Levon went on to win big at the
Americana Awards. Now comes the
follow-up and if anything, it is even
better. Produced by multi
instrumentalist Larry Campbell, who is
Levon's right and left hand man, it
ranges across the entire gamut from
folk roots to Muddy Waters' blues. One
cut I particularly like is Randy
Newman's "Kingfish." I great CD and
my co-Album of the Month.
This is a surprise but a really pleasant
one. Brad is a highly talented singer
and writer and this should be a major
album. In fact if you take John Denver,
Jim Croce and Tom Paxton, you will get
a handle on Brad's music. Even
though Brad is not on a major label, I
believe that Brad will pick up a cult
following. This is a must have CD.

For the uninitiated, Stockholm
Syndrome is where a kidnap victim
starts to feel empathy with her/his
kidnapper. Patty Hearst was said to
suffer with Stockholm Syndrome. So I
am mystified what this CD had to do
with it. That apart, the album is very
stripped down and reminds me of
releases in the 70s. I gather it
supposed to be "political" but I guess I
missed it. Perhaps if I had had the lyric
sheets I might have got it.
I have been a REK fan since he had Jr.
after his name. I have never known him
release a bad album and I doubt it will
ever happen. This CD is produced by
Lloyd Maines and is a work of art. Most
of the material was written or co-written
by Robert Earl with one notable
exception being Townes Van Zandt's
"Flyin' Shoes." My favorite cut is
without doubt "10,000 Chinese Walk
Into A Bar" on which he is joined by
Billy Bob Thornton. Greg Brown who
wrote "Laughing River" joins in on lead
vox on the track. This is excellent and
one that has me scratching my head
why Robert Earl Keen is not a major
star.
I have always viewed John as the best
voice in Bluegrass and Americana.
Having had the pleasure of listening to
John sing a capella, I was hooked on
this CD before even hearing it. It is a
beautiful blend of original material and
covers of songs by Randy Handley,
Dennis Linde, Rick Roberts, Barbara
Lamb, Jesse Winchester and Merle
Travis. Among the stellar support
pickers are Bela Fleck, Kenny
Greenberg, Randy Kohrs, Barbara
Lamb, Darrell Scott and Scott Vestal. It
is impossible to select a favorite cut
because each is a mini classic.
