I've listed this under Americana but
really it could have been listed under
Country, Texas Swing, Jazz or Blues
because it is all of the above. This is a
great record to pull out at New Year's
Eve. If you like The Time Jumpers, Mel
& The Party Hats, Asleep At The
Wheel and Booker T., you will want this
CD in your collection. Some great horn
blowing from Max Abrams rounds off
the CD and leaves you wantingto put it
back on the player.
Fabuloso!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I once rang Barry from England and
told him their version of "Party Doll"
was the nearest thing to a musical
orgasmic experience. They sent me
this their latest CD and here go those
twitches. This is the nearest thing to
musical heaven this side of the actual
place and I'm sure I spotted a couple
of the archangels bopping along. This
makes up for all the rubbish that
crosses my desk. I am not going to
single out any one track because this
is a case where the entire CD is great
and Barry and Holly you are great
writers. This will be the CD of the
Month for December.

Sometimes a CD falls into my lap in the
strangest ways. Here's a case in point.
Barb gets a message from Delmark
and it turns out that they attended the
same high school in Amherst, NY. So,
he sends a copy of his CD. Now it
came out in 2004 but what the heck.
So we listen in the car and I am on a
time journey back to my folk club and
folk agency days back at the end of
the 60's. Del's voice is a mix of Jack
and Chicken Soup; edgy yet feel good.
Hearing him and I am reliving the
essence of Stefan Grossman,
Mississippi Fred McDowell, Mungo
Jerry and then I hear the Lovin'
Spoonful in full glory and then
someone is playing the harp and lo
and behold it is old John Sebastian
actually playing what sounds to me like
a Marine Band. Theres also some
great bottleneck from Tommy
Burroughs that takes me back to Mike
Chapman. Man, this is one of the best
CDs to cross my desk. Next time Del,
get your next CD to me sooner so that
I can rave quicker!!

Thom Schuyler should be Poet
Laureate!!! My fondest memory of
Thom goes back to an evening at The
Bluebird when he sang his "16th
Avenue" as Bob Dylan. I remember the
days of SKB and SKO and those
magical songs. This long awaited CD is
a blend of the lyrical and melodic along
with Thom's Silversteinian humor. I can
never look at a Hummer without
hearing his take on the most
pretentious of vehicles and who could
pick up a drink without feeling
sympatico with "Too Drunk." In these
days of cotton candy songs, Thom
Schuyler is a breath of fresh air and
should be compulsory listening for
wannabe songwriters. This gets a 1000
points out of 10!!!
Danny's career spans four decades
and his songs have been recorded by
the likes of Elvis Presley, Judy Collins,
Leon Russell, Willie Nelson, Waylon
Jennings, Jimmy Buffett, Jackson
Browne, Alison Krauss, Ben Harper,
Cab Calloway, Mark Almond and he
has written with Dylan. He even had a
big hit himself with "Goodtime Charlie's
Got The Blues." So you can tell that we
are talking quality here. Since 1971,
he has only released 10 albums of
which only three have emerged this
decade. There's an old saying..."if you
like.....then you'll like..." In this case, if
you like Randy Newman, Michael
McDonald and James Taylor then you
will like Danny O'Keefe. Go visit
www.dannyokeefe.com to learn more
about Danny. Like Thom Schuyler, he
is a National Treasure.
For some 25 years, Blue Rodeo is the
Country Rock band that has been at
the forefront of the genre in Canada.
They have racked up a great fan
following and multi million sales as well
as numerous awards. If you remember
the movie "Postcards From The Edge,"
then it Blue Rodeo that appear at the
end of the film. Yet they have never
broken through in the lower 48 and
that is the U.S.'s loss because they are
damned fine band. This mix media
compilation is a great way to get to
know Blue Rodeo.
