Hard Headed
Unlike any other major star, Elvis' fan base is
more easily divided not only by musical tastes but
by genders. If you look at the Beatles, for
example, one is a fan or not. It is not just women
who admired their output but it is across the
board. Their career was relatively short whereas
Elvis' covered over 20 years. His early output
bears no relationship to his final years. In many
ways, it could be simplistically called the good,
the bad and the ugly. That would certainly be the
view if you were a rocker. His Sun recordings and
his early RCA recordings being the good, his
movies being the bad and the Vegas years being
the ugly. However, if you female and drooled
when he played the Vegas casinos, then the
reverse may be more appropriate with the
exception that you would probably drool over his
movies.

However, his career shouldn't be made simplistic
or pigeon holed because he did indeed record
some excellent material during all the phases of
his career. Movies such as "King Creole" and
"G.I. Blues" contained fine songs while his latter
career contained his great renditions of "Polk
Salad Annie," "Promised Land," "In The Ghetto"
and "Burning Love."

We are always left with the question "what would
Elvis have evolved into had he lived?" I would
love to fantasize of Elvis with Springsteen or John
Mayer or that other Elvis, Costello.

When Michael Jackson died, the media behaved
almost like Elvis was chop liver when the truth
was that MJ was not even in the same ball park!!

This CD collection is a great way of discovering
Elvis' career from the start and also discovering a
few songs that are rarities including Elvis sings
Dylan. Definitely a collection for every collection.
Now I look at the cover with Elvis swivelling his
hips and I wonder if at 75 would still be able to do
that. I know at 66, I couldn't but that's what makes
just ONE Elvis.
